Grant named GFU's new associate director of athletics |
Steve Grant was
recently named George Fox University’s new associate director of
intercollegiate athletics, filling the position vacated by Pat
Bailey.
Bailey, the school’s head baseball coach, recently left to become
an assistant coach at Oregon State University.
Grant, entering his 26th season as George Fox’s head volleyball
coach, has the longest tenure of any current coach at the
university. The recipient of the 2006-2007 Faculty Achievement Award
for Undergraduate Teaching, he is also in his fifth year as chairman
of the health and human performance department.
Grant’s new
responsibilities will include directing operations of the Bruin
Athletic Association and the Hall of Fame; assisting in the
recruitment of student athletes; and coordinating game management
issues, such as managing video crews and concessions stands.
“I wanted to be appointed as associate athletic director for many
reasons,” Grant said. “My job at George Fox has been important to me
for many years, (but) for several years I’ve thought it would be
nice to get a change — I thought this (position) might be a
challenge.”
“I look forward to ... serving many more student athletes. I can be
a part of helping to continue ... the positive impression George Fox
is making on the community.”
Grant said that Bailey, the school’s first associate athletic
director, will be difficult to replace.
“He’s left some pretty big footprints,” he said. “But I’ve gotten
some really good advice from (athletic director) Craig Taylor.
Without his advice and mentoring and guidance, the (transition)
would be a lot more difficult.”
In his career at George Fox, Grant has led the volleyball team to
win two National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA)
national championships, one Women’s Conference of Independent
Colleges conference championship and one Northwest Conference (NWC)
Championship. He was named the NCCAA National Coach of the Year
twice, the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics
District 2 Coach of the Year twice and the NWC Coach of the Year
once.
He holds a career record of 517-331, ninth for victories
among active NCAA Division III coaches.
Grant graduated from Biola University in 1969 and earned a master’s
degree in education from Linfield College in 1985. He lives in
Newberg with his wife Kathy, an admissions counselor for George
Fox’s Continuing Education Department. |
