C.S. Lewis recruits Fox grad as new volleyball coach

C.S. Lewis Academy will begin its new volleyball season with a new coach: George Fox grad Roxanne Ashland.
Ashland, 22, graduated from GFU in May with a degree in elementary education and recently earned her state teaching certification, but jumped at the chance to become a coach.
“I’m not sure if I want to pursue a career as a coach as opposed to a regular teacher, but prep sports is something I plan to continue to be involved in throughout my life,” Ashland said. “I’m excited to be starting this early and I want to see where it takes me.”
While this is Ashland’s first professional coaching position, the Keizer native previously volunteered as a volleyball coach for the Boys and Girls Club of Salem, as well as playing the sport in high school at Willamette Valley Christian and on the GFU intramural team.
“I played a lot of sports in high school, but with volleyball it just clicked,” she said. “One of the reasons was that I had a great coach, Elisa Hunter. She actually let me know about the job opening at C.S. Lewis — they play in the same league as my high school.”
When interviewed for this story, Ashland had yet to receive her roster and meet the members of her team, but said she was looking forward to beginning practice.
“I’ve got a little bit of nerves — any new job has that,” she said. “But I hope to be the sort of coach that encourages hard work and setting goals. I’m going to focus on motivating and challenging my (players) to do their best.”
With the first game of the season on Sept. 4, Ashland adds, preparing her team for the court will be her first priority.
“We’ll be doing a lot of conditioning to get in shape, and a lot of drills, because we’re going right into the season,” she said. “I’m excited to see how the girls improve and what the season has in store for us.”
