In the warm August sun, student
athletes jog across the green grass of the Newberg High School
athletic field under the watchful eye of head football coach Eric
Carlson. The leader of the Chehalem Park and Recreation District’s
football camp, held this week, Carlson is already looking to the
season ahead.
Of the 65 teens enrolled in the camp, the majority — around 45 —
will play on the Tigers’ freshman, JV or varsity squads once the
school year begins.
The camp offers them
the chance to get their head in the game before regular practice
begins Aug. 20.
“It’s not mandatory, but they want to be good players. Football’s a
complex game and you can’t really practice it by yourself,” Carlson
says as he surveys the field. “Our first game of the season is Aug.
31, so we like to have the basics in place even before practice
starts.”
Now in its 19th year, the football camp was started by Carlson as
head coach to get a jump on the season, as well as allowing older
middle school students to get a taste of high school ball.
The majority of students attending already play regular positions,
either for the Tigers or in local leagues, allowing Carlson and his
assistant coaches to drill them in their specialties and practice
the passing and running plays they will use on the field this fall.
“If we start (learning the playbook) from scratch on Aug. 20 —
well, 6A teams just don’t do that in this day and age,” Carlson
said. |
