Goodrich wins all-around title in St. Paul Rodeo
Brad Goodrich scored the all-around title Thursday with a tie for first in calf roping at the 72nd annual St. Paul Rodeo.
Goodrich, of Hermiston, recorded a time of 9.7 seconds, the same time of J. Cody Jones of Kelseyville, Calif. Goodrich managed the all-around title due to a coin flip. In most professional rodeo events, when two competitors tie atop the standings in an event, a coin is flipped and one wins the all-around title (Goodrich) and the other wins a belt buckle (Jones).
Jess Davis of Payson, Utah scored an 87 to win the bareback competition and pocketed $10,580.62 by riding Lone Wolf of Western Rodeos. Davis currently ranks third in the world rankings.
Matt Marvel defended his St. Paul Rodeo title in the bronc riding competition by scoring an 88 to win $12,162.37. Last year, Marvel won $10,659 in the event.
B.J. Schumacher won the bull riding event by riding “God’s Gift” of John Kish who supplies many of the Growney Brothers bulls. Schumacher is the reigning world champion in bull riding and won $248,000 in prize money last year. Schumacher earned $12,034.25 in total prize money.
In the steer wrestling competition, Clayton Hass won the event with a time of 3.8 seconds, narrowly missing the St. Paul Rodeo arena record of 3.5 seconds. He beat out 79 other competitors in the event to walk away with $6,556.66.
Allen Bach and his partner Chad Masters won the first go round team roping event in 5.3 seconds. Bach, the reigning world champion, won the same event last year with a different partner.  The second go round winners were Jake Stanley and Russell Cardoza in 5.5 seconds.
In the third go round was the combined times of the first two go rounds and the winners were Stanley and Cardoza in 11.4 seconds. Masters and Bach finished second in 11.9 seconds. Stanley and Cardoza won $4,543.30 apiece
In the women’s barrel racing, a Professional Women’s Barrel Racing event, Brittany Pozzi-Pharr, the winner of the same event last year in St. Paul, won in 17.19 seconds. Pozzi-Pharr also had the distinction of being the first rider to compete in any event in this year’s St. Paul Rodeo. Pozzi-Pharr, who ranked second in the world standings prior to the St. Paul Rodeo, was awarded $6,583 for her victory.

Notes: The lone complete sellout of a performance of the rodeo occurred Tuesday night.
“That’s traditionally pretty consistent,” said St. Paul Rodeo secretary Kevin Smith. “That’s when people seem to like to come out of the most.”
