ST. PAUL — It didn’t
matter how Josh Verburg did it, it was just a matter that he did.
In front of 6,600 at the Pro Bullriders Challenger Tour Saturday,
Verburg, a native of Fresno, Calif., did not place in the
preliminaries or “long go.” Instead, Verburg was the lone rider to
ride two bulls in the finals, or “short go,” and scored a 92.5 for a
total score of 171.5, walking away with $5,116.08 to open the 72nd
Annual St. Paul Rodeo. Verburg also was awarded a $600 gold and
silver belt buckle made by Skyline Silversmiths.
Verburg’s ride in the finals was the only one to go all eight
seconds. Kevin Smith, the longtime secretary of the board of the St.
Paul Rodeo, said Saturday night’s occurrence wasn’t normal.
“It could happen,” he said. “It’s slightly unusual. What was
probably unusual was that one bull got covered in the finals.”
Cory McFadden of Coleman, Texas scored a 92 in the long go and
placed second overall to also earn $5,116.08. Cody Ford placed third
with a score of 91 to earn $3,342.48. Other placers included Tyler
Thompson fourth-place finish of 88.5 ($2,278.32), Tyler Pankewitz’s
fifth-place finish of 83.5 ($1,356.05), AJ Hamre’s sixth-place
finish of 83 ($717.55), Ted Bert’s seventh-place finish of 82
($575.66) and Chad Denon’s eighth-place finish of 81 ($433.78).
Verburg’s luck was considerably better than that of Sam Smith of
Sulphur Springs, Texas. He scored a 75 in the long go and then
scored a 70 in the short go. After his second score, judges gave him
a re-ride and Smith was summarily bucked off, as was his payday. If
he had simply taken his first ride, he would have enough points to
finish in second place.
Verburg and McFadden were also entered in the rodeo. McFadden
competed Sunday night and bucked off. Verburg drew a bull named
“Blue Christmas” of the Burch Rodeo Company on Tuesday, but results
were unavailable as of press time.
Local riders Ross Coleman and Dustin Smith both bucked off their
respective bulls in the long go portion of Saturday night’s
competition and failed to place. |
