Eleven members of Newberg High School’s 2006 boys and girls state championship water polo teams were recently named All-Americans by the National Interscholastic Swimming Coaches Association.
Eight boys and three girls received the national post season honor. Boys named to the first team were Cray Rogers and Keary Schlactus, Nate Bush was a second team honoree, Chase Hansen and Jon Maxwell nabbed spots on the third team, Jordan Anderson and Jeff Hockema were fourth team selections and Austin McKenzie rounded out the field with a fifth team pick.
This past season, the boys team finished with an overall 39-1 record and defeated Westview 18-2 in the state championship game. Schlactus, Bush, Rogers and Hansen were selected to the all-state tournament first team. Maxwell was a second team selection.
The girls All-American recipients were Adrienne Cheney to the first team and Morgan Jones and Andrea Wilson on the second team.
The Newberg girls squad finished this past season with an overall 32-5 record on its way to winning its second consecutive state championship with an 8-2 win against Southridge in the state title game. Overall, it was the girls program’s 14th state title.
Cheney, who scored four goals in the title game, was a first team all-state tournament selection as a sophomore and as a junior. Wilson was a first team all-state pick; Jones was a second team selection as goalie.
Rogers, Bush, Hansen, Anderson, Hockema, Cheney and Wilson will return for their senior seasons this fall. The graduated seniors are readying themselves for college: Schlactus will attend the University of California at San Diego; Maxwell is headed to the University of Oregon; McKenzie will attend the U.S. Air Force Academy and Jones will go to the University of Hawaii.
According to Newberg coach Jim McMaster, those honored are “kids that really enjoy the sport, who surpassed a lot of expectations.”
NISCA, founded in 1934, selects the national All American teams based on the recommendation of high school coaches and the governing body of the zone where the team is located. In all, 138 athletes nationwide are selected for six teams (first through fifth and honorable mention) for each gender.
