WOODBURN — Newberg suffered a loss Friday in the semifinals to Keizer and a defeat at the hands of Camas Saturday to place fifth at the Junior Baseball of Oregon Midget American State Tournament.
Newberg opened the tournament with one run wins against Sellwood and Silverton, but the squad struggled in the semifinals Friday against Keizer and suffered an 11-5 loss. Keizer jumped out early and held a 9-1 lead in the third inning before Newberg scored twice in the fourth and two more in the fifth.
“We just didn’t have enough baserunners and base hits,” Newberg coach Joe Rarick said. “They outplayed us. They hit the ball well and pitched well.”
Saturday morning, the team returned to action, this time in the consolation bracket. Newberg played Camas and fell 6-3. Rarick said Camas systematically took advantage of Newberg errors and miscues.
“We also had a really slow start and weren’t hitting the ball well,” he said. “We just didn’t play like we had in the past.”
The two teams Newberg fell to in the tournament went on to fare well in the tournament: Camas took third and Keizer won the tourney.
Overall, Rarick said he was happy with how his team performed. He said of nearly 100 teams in the state playing in the Midget American division, Newberg’s fifth-place finish wasn’t anything to scoff at, particularly because the squad had just three players who had played in the JBO organization previously. The others had played in Cal Ripken, which has a different set of rules, one of which is that baserunners aren’t allowed to lead off.
“I thought it was pretty impressive to get fifth out of all these teams,” Rarick said.
