Newberg team doomed by pair of one-run losses |
BEAVERTON — The Newberg
Junior Federal baseball team suffered narrow losses Thursday and
Friday and were eliminated from the district tournament at Sunset
Park.
On Thursday, Newberg fell 6-5 to McMinnville. Newberg held a 5-3
lead with two outs in the sixth and final inning before McMinnville
scored three times to earn the win.
“It was kind of a heartbreaker of a loss,” Newberg coach Dave
Miller said.
After Newberg recorded two quick outs in the final inning, the
squad committed an error and McMinnville took advantage with a
triple to pull within 5-4. After another McMinnville base hit,
Newberg appeared to have the game wrapped up when Newberg pitcher
Cole Miller had a McMinnville runner in a rundown between first and
second base. However, a throw to first base flew into the fence,
allowing the McMinnville runner to reach second base.
Later, a ball was hit to shortstop Andrew Reichenbach, who was
shielded by the McMinnville runner enough that it prevented
Reichenbach from making a play. The ball trickled into the outfield
and a run scored to win the game.
“It was a good hit, though,” Dave Miller said. “(Reichenbach)
didn’t mess it up by any stretch of the imagination.”
Miller said the loss made his team take notice.
“It got their attention,” he said. “It affected them. We only hoped
they would come back the next night.”
On Friday, the squad took on Sherwood and fell behind 1-0 in the
second inning before a Sherwood run in the sixth put Newberg in a
2-0 deficit. In the bottom of the sixth, Newberg mounted a comeback.
Jonathan Morales walked, Colby Lewis flied out to second base and
Jake Irsik layed down a sacrifice bunt to move Morales to second.
Jordan Skoubo followed with an RBI single to right field and stole
second base, but Anthony Farr flied out to first base to end the
game and Newberg’s season.
“It was just a well-played game by both teams,” Miller said. “We
just didn’t get a timely hit.”
Newberg finished with a 17-17 overall record during the season. It
finished 8-8 in league play after it opened its season with three
consecutive losses.
“Talent-wise, our boys were just as good as anybody,” Dave Miller
said. “They could play with anybody in the league. We just didn’t
get some breaks and bounces. We left a fair amount of runners
stranded. The lack of a timely hit was the story of our season. It
was a fun season, though. They got some good experience in taking
that next step.” |
