Newberg Senior American squad set for impending state tourney |

Just because the
Newberg Senior American baseball team hasn’t played in more than two
weeks, don’t think the squad is rusty.
If anything, the time off has been a blessing, says Newberg coach
Russ Young. His squad is probably the most healthy out of any team
heading into the Junior Baseball of Oregon Senior American State
tournament starting Thursday at Poynter Middle School in Hillsboro.
“The good thing is that most of my pitchers’ arms are healed,”
Young said. “It was pretty tough from what I heard at the playoffs
this weekend.”
Young’s team, made up of 13- and 14-year-olds, wouldn’t know about
the district tournament. The team wasn’t there because it had
already earned an automatic berth into the state tournament by
finishing the season 15-2-2. While Young’s teams rested, teams at
the district tournament rushed and played several games within a
close time frame because of an impending storm that was thought
might cancel the whole tournament. In the end, the tournament went
on as scheduled.
“We had a good time relaxing and I think we’re pretty sharp going
into a new little area,” Young said.
But just because Newberg will likely be the most rested team at the
tournament, it doesn’t mean an automatic state championship. After
all, the team’s two losses this season came at the hands of the two
teams at the bottom of the league standings — Forest Grove and
Reedville.
“It’s going to be a good tournament,” Young said. “The potential
for any team, we’ve found, is that any team can win at any time.
There is no favorite. I just have to tell my guys that they’ve got
to play up to their level and not have us play down to their level.”
Newberg will kick the tournament off at 9 a.m. Thursday when it
takes on Sunset. |
