Newberg opens state tourney with pair of victories |
WOODBURN — Games don’t get
much more exciting than the two Newberg played Thursday in the
opening day of the Junior Baseball of Oregon Midget American State
Tournament at Centennial Park.
One game went down to a tag at home to end the game and the other
ended with a runner stealing home with the bases loaded in the final
inning. The best part for Newberg, a team of 9- and 10-year-olds,
was that it came out on top in both skirmishes.
The squad, sponsored by Coyote Homes, opened the 14-team tournament
against Sellwood. Newberg, ahead 2-0 to start the third inning,
scored five times to take a 7-0 lead in the third.
Sellwood bounced back in the third to score a run before it recorded
four more runs in the fourth.
Sellwood came back again in the final inning (the fifth) with a
run. With Newberg clinging to a 7-6 lead, Newberg pitcher Tyler
DeLashmutt threw a wild pitch. A Sellwood runner at third base
bolted for home plate as Newberg catcher Christopher Schreiber
scrambled to find the ball. He did and tossed the ball to DeLashmutt
covering home and he made the tag to end the game.
Newberg moved on to face the tournament’s No. 1 seed — Silverton.
In a back-and-forth game that stood tied until the bottom of the
fifth inning, Newberg, the No. 14 seed, took advantage of an
opportunity. DeLashmutt was walked before Hayden Greene and Bryson
Hockett were issued intentional walks. With two outs, Kyle Rarick,
who struck out in his previous at-bat, was up. But Rarick never got
the chance to swing. DeLashmutt sprinted and stole home to win the
game 12-11 for Newberg.
“I figured we might as well take a chance here,” Newberg coach Joe Rarick
said.
Newberg survived the game in spite of using five pitchers.
“I was running out of pitchers,” Rarick said. “If we were to go
extra innings, we were going to be in trouble.” |
