BEND — The Abby’s American
Legion AAA baseball team finished 3-1 this past weekend at a wood
bat tournament in Bend.
The Tigers finished second in their pool and played the opposite
bracket’s second-place team — Liberty — in the finale Sunday and won
15-2.
“It was really good,” Abby’s coach Frank Baumholtz said. “(Even)
with wood bats, we hit the heck out of the ball. We just pounded the
hits and scored a bunch of runs. With the exception of the game
Thursday against Tualatin, we played really well.”
American Legion baseball is typically played with aluminum bats.
The Tigers opened the tournament with a 12-6 loss to Tualatin, then
rebounded with a dramatic 6-5 win in eight innings against David
Douglas. In the bottom of the eighth, Emmitt Ackerlund got on base
via a David Douglas error before Ryan Wilson hit an RBI single to
give the Tigers the win.
Abby’s then defeated Mountain View 11-5, powered by a home run each
by Nick Reynolds and Matt Twenge.
In the final game, Abby’s took on Liberty, a team it lost to 20-5
on July 5. Sunday’s game was different, though, as Twenge struck out
14 batters in the win. Wilson and Evan Windsor added three hits a
piece and Twenge and Reynolds both hit home runs in the win.
