Despite a 1-3 record
at The End of the Trail Tournament, hosted by Oregon City High
School, the Newberg High School girls basketball team has a little
something to smile about.
During the summer, new coach Tamie Woginrich said the Tigers
surprised themselves by winning eight games.
“They were very surprised and thrilled with themselves,” she said.
“The girls are wonderful and want to work hard and that makes my job
a lot easier.”
The squad finished its summer league play at the tournament by
falling to Juneau (Alaska) Douglas in Canby, followed by a loss to
Neuqua Valley of Naperville, Ill., at Clackamas Community College.
Later, the Tigers fell to nearby Westview before they scored their
lone win of the tournament against Wilson.
Woginrich said she felt throughout the summer that the Tigers were
ahead of schedule in terms of how the team was progressing.
“I’m changing a lot about the program like philosophies and getting
us to play more of an up-tempo game,” she said. “I didn’t know if
they were going to catch on to it as quickly as they are, but
they’re actually doing a really good job. I’m really excited.” |
