GRESHAM — Matt Twenge struck out 14 batters and the Abby’s American Legion AAA baseball team had 11 hits in a 9-1 win Sunday to place third at the 2007 Centennial AAA Legion Wood Bat Tournament.
Twenge was dominant throughout the game, including striking out the side in the second inning. The only time Twenge was in trouble was in the fourth. Grant scored its lone run of the game and then followed it by loading the bases with an out before Twenge struck out the following two batters to get out of the inning.
“He threw well,” Abby’s coach Frank Baumholtz said. “He did his job. It was nice to have him come in. We had great pitching performances all weekend long.”
On Friday the Tigers (13-13) opened the tournament with a 2-1 win against Centennial. Linden Fisher pitched six innings for Abby’s and held Centennial to a run and five hits. After Taylor Burrows scored on a passed ball in the top of the sixth to break the 1-1 tie, Centennial loaded the bases with no outs off Fisher in the seventh inning before Twenge came in for relief. After he struck out the first batter, Twenge induced two groundouts to give the Tigers the narrow win.
“It was exciting,” Baumholtz said. “It was right down to the last pitch. The home team (fans) were here and there were a lot of them, but it was a great atmosphere. That was a good win for us.”
Fisher had four strikeouts, no walks and hit one batter in the game for the Tigers.
On Saturday, Baumholtz said he was happy with the pitching of Trevor Terranova, who threw six innings, struck out seven and walked three, even though the Tigers fell 4-1 to Reynolds before Sunday’s win against Grant.
“Pitching-wise, we’ve been doing an outstanding job,” Baumholtz said. “(Twenge) finished it off and a third-place finish in a tournament makes you feel pretty good.”
Baumholtz said he was pleased with the way the Tigers regrouped after Thursday’s disheartening 20-5 loss at Liberty.
“I wasn’t worried really at all,” he said. “We’ve been talking all year about our approach and even on Thursday, we were there, but just didn’t take advantage of situations. We let other things that we couldn’t control effect us, so it was good that we played well all weekend in three games in a row.”
The Tigers jumped on Grant in the third inning thanks to four hits and three balks by the Grant pitcher. Nick Reynolds hit an RBI triple to the center field wall, the scored on a balk. Brett Case and Mitchell Sturdevant made it on base after a pair of Grant errors before an RBI single to left field by Twenge and a two-RBI single to left field by Terranova gave the Tigers a 5-0 lead.
The Tigers tacked on another run in the fifth when Ryan Wilson scored on a sacrifice by Sturdevant. In the seventh, Wilson led the inning off with a triple to right field before he scored off a sacrifice by Case. Terranova hit an RBI double to left field before he scored on a Grant error.
“The bats kind of came alive today,” Baumholtz said. “We put the ball in play and took advantage of some of their mistakes and that was really good.”
The Tigers return to action Thursday at a tournament in Bend. They will face Tualatin at 2 p.m. Thursday, followed by a 2 p.m. game against David Douglas on Friday and a 3 p.m. game against Mountain View on Saturday. When the Tigers play on Sunday is determined by how they fare in their opening three games.
The Tigers then close out the regular season July 16 when they host Century in a 6 p.m. game.

Notes: In Friday’s win, Abby’s had two hits. Burrows, an outfielder, had the RBI that drove in the first run for the Tigers and then later scored the go-ahead run in the sixth inning on a passed ball. Burrows also went 2 for 3 with an RBI in Saturday’s loss to Reynolds.
“That was good for him,” Baumholtz said. “He hadn’t seen a lot of time and he’s a guy whose gotten a chance to play a little bit and he’s taking advantage of it.”
