PORTLAND — The
Chehalem men’s and women’s water polo teams claimed the top spots in
both divisions Sunday at the 2007 Oregon State Games held at
Multnomah Athletic Club.
On the men’s side, Chehalem was taken to a shootout by a squad of
former college players, College Made, before it prevailed with 3-2
victory in penalty shots on the strength of a closing save by goalie
Chase Hansen.
“Our guys, overall, are pretty impressive,” Chehalem coach Jim
McMaster said. “We’re playing guys who are a little out of shape,
but who have a lot of experience on our guys. (The final game) was a
great opportunity for us to play at a high level.”
Even with the championship in hand, McMaster still said there is
work to be done.
“The only thing we need to do is more conditioning, but as far as
our water polo skills are, we’re right up there,” he said.
The route to the title for the Chehalem men was marked by wins over
Tualatin Hills (12-0), Willamette Valley (16-4), Portland Masters
(14-2) and a first round victory over College Made (7-3).
The Chehalem women, comprised of both current and former Newberg
high school players, cruised to the championship with a 14-5 victory
against Tualatin Hills. The Chehalem team included players such as
Mari Joyce, who played for three NCAA national championship teams at
UCLA; USC grad Laura Trunk; and Jamie Doan, a 1989 Newberg High
School graduate who went on to compete on the U.S. National Team for
10 years. McMaster said the younger players on the high school team
were able to learn quite a bit from the older players.
“It was great and it gives the younger girls a chance to play with
some really experienced girls,” McMaster said.
The women’s posted preliminary wins over Willamette Valley (14-3)
and a first round win over Tualatin Hills (10-3).
The Chehalem women’s scoring leaders were Andrea Wilson and Joyce
with six goals each. Adrienne Cheney assisted on 10 goals and goalie
Morgan Jones stopped 15 shots.
The Chehalem men were led in scoring by the 12 goals of Keary
Schlactus (who will attend the University of California-San Diego
this fall) and Ricky Rogers with 11 goals. Jon Maxwell paced the
team with six assists while Cray Rogers added five. Jeff Hockema led
the team in earned ejections with seven. Hansen stopped 43 opponent
shots in five regulation games and an additional two in the title
clinching shootout.
Chehalem next hosts a summer tournament beginning at 3 p.m. Friday
and runs through Sunday. The tournament will host 10 men’s teams,
eight women’s teams and three 14-and-under squads. |
