Pair of Newberg grads face off in Sacramento |

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Two
Newberg High School graduates have a shot at a national title today.
Mallory Webb, a senior at Fresno State University, and Rachel
Yurkovich, a sophomore at the University of Oregon, competed in the
preliminaries of the women’s javelin competition Thursday at the
NCAA Track and Field Championships.
Yurkovich, a two-time state champion at Newberg, threw 162-feet,
8-inches on her first attempt before she passed on her final two
attempts. Webb, the 2003 Oregon high school girls javelin state
champion, threw all three of her attempts. On her final attempt,
Webb recorded her best throw of the meet and of her career — 170-4.
Yurkovich is the University of Oregon school record-holder in the
event with a mark of 189-11.
Webb sits in second place and Yurkovich in fifth heading into the
10 a.m. finals today. Erma Gene Evans of University of Texas-El Paso
had the competition’s top throw (179-2). Following Webb was Carolee
Gutierrez of Eastern Washington (170-1), Anna Raynor of the
University of North Carolina-Wilmington (168-4), Yurkovich, Ruby
Radocaj of Minnesota (162-6), Lindsey Blaine of Purdue (162-4),
Krista Woodward of Georgia (161-9), Kim Heinz of Long Beach State
(161-6) and Andrea Ketvova of Southern Methodist (161-5) to round
out the top 10. |
