A pair of close losses
spoiled the debut of the Abby’s American Legion AAA baseball team.
The team, primarily made up of players from this past season’s
Newberg High School squad, suffered a 7-6 loss at Grant Friday and
4-3 loss Saturday at Aloha.
“We played well,” Abby’s coach Frank Baumholtz said. “Our guys
pitched well and on Saturday we swung the bat pretty good. We were
aggressive on the base paths and had opportunities.”
On Friday, Mitchell Sturdevant started on the mound for the Tigers
and struck out five and walked two in five innings.
Both Nick Reynolds and Levi Fletcher went 2 for 4 against the
Generals. Fletcher also had two RBI and Emmitt Ackerland added an
RBI triple for Abby’s.
Abby’s fell behind 7-4, but rallied to bring the Tigers within a
run before the game ended with Abby’s stranding the tying run on
second base.
Fletcher took the mound Saturday against Aloha and pitched all
seven innings, but suffered the loss. He struck out seven and walked
two batters. Mitchell Sturdevant went 2 for 3 and Nick Reynolds and
Brett Case both went 2 for 4 with an RBI each.
The Tigers held a 2-1 lead to start the sixth inning before they
gave up two runs to fall behind 3-2 to start the seventh. Abby’s
tied the game in the top of the seventh before Aloha responded with
the game-winning run in the bottom of the inning.
“It was a good baseball game,” Baumholtz said. “We’re close. We
just need to stay consistent and keep doing what we’re doing and
good things are going to happen.”
The games kicked off a 33-game schedule for the Tigers. Abby’s will
also have two other teams playing a summer league schedule — a
Division I team and the Division II team.
Four years ago, the program had one summer team. A year after that,
the program had two before one of the teams folded. Two years ago
the program had two teams before the program had enough players for
three teams this summer.
“It’s just continuing to build and build,” Baumholtz said. “With
our numbers, it shows the stuff that we’re doing all the way through
the program, and not just on the baseball end of it. We’ve got more
kids playing and creating opportunities for our guys.” |
