Chehalem boys take second at tourney
With the summer water polo season heating up, the Chehalem boys 18-and-under team is hot.
The squad recently finished second at the Tualatin Hills Early Summer Invitational, held June 22-23 in Beaverton.
After Chehalem defeated Dos Pueblos (a team from northern California) in the opener, Chehalem defeated host Tualatin Hills 13-1. Chehalem then played United, a team comprised of some of the top players in Oregon and Washington, and won 17-14, but Chehalem Coach Jim McMaster was unimpressed with the win.
“It was not very good defense on our part if we had 14 goals against us,” he said.
In the finals, Chehalem faced the Portland Masters, a team of former collegiate players. Chehalem trailed by a goal with less than a minute left before a steal by Chehalem seemed to give the squad a chance to tie the game. However, a referee made “a really interesting call,” McMaster said, going against Chehalem and giving the ball back to Portland. The Masters squad scored a goal in the final minute to hand Chehalem the loss.
“It was good for our guys because (the Portland Masters) had so much more experience than us, so it was good to play those guys,” McMaster said.
Chehalem next plays July 9 at the State Games of Oregon at Multnomah Athletic Club. An open women’s team from Chehalem will also compete in the tournament.
From July 13 to July 15, Chehalem will host its annual Chehalem Invitational Tournament, followed by another invitational tournament at Tualatin Hills July 21-22. Chehalem then will travel to San Jose, Calif., to compete in the National Junior Olympics, an event the team finished in 17th last summer.

Notes: On June 24, the Chehalem boys 14-and-under team traveled to West Albany High School and defeated Willamette, West Albany and Tualatin to win a tournament.
“We’ve got a pretty young, dynamic middle school team,” McMaster said.
