The Abby’s American Legion AAA
baseball team capped a busy stretch of seven games in six days with
10-2 and 12-10 wins Monday at home vs St. Helens.
The packed schedule started June 20 when the Tigers defeated
Sunset. The following day, the Tigers hosted their own Newberg
Invitational Tournament and played four games before the final day
of the tournament was rained out Sunday.
Abby’s returned to
action Monday with a pair of wins against St. Helens. In the 10-2
win in the first game, Mitchell Sturdevant went the distance on the
mound for the Tigers.
The Saints scored the game’s first two runs before Abby’s Levi
Fletcher hit an RBI single in the first inning to pull the Tigers
within 2-1. Abby’s took the lead for good the following inning when
Sturdevant scored off a wild pitch before an RBI single by Bret
Case.
The Tigers increased the lead in the third when Spencer Hales and
Ryan Myers hit RBI doubles to give the Tigers a 5-2 lead. Myers hit
an RBI double to center field in the fifth before Sturdevant’s
two-RBI double to right field in the seventh. The Tigers then took
advantage of two wild pitches to score the final two runs.
In the second game, Abby’s starter Linden Fisher gave up five hits
and five runs to St. Helens in the first inning before the Tigers
rebounded. The Saints eventually took a 10-7 lead into the bottom of
the sixth inning before the Tigers reeled off five runs.
Reynolds hit an RBI double down the third base line, then scored
off a Saints wild pitch to pull Abby’s within 10-9. Sturdevant hit
an RBI single to right field before Fletcher scored off a throwing
error to give the Tigers their first lead of the game at 11-10.
Abby’s scored its final run of the game with an RBI single to right
field by Hales.
Abby’s reliever Matt Twenge earned the win for the Tigers, pitching
the final two innings.
“That was nice to see,” Abby’s assistant coach David Case said. “He
hadn’t pitched for a while, so we wanted him to get a little bit of
bullpen work.”
Case, who was serving as the coach of the Tigers in place of
vacationing head coach Frank Baumholtz, said he was happy to see the
Tigers rebound from a five-run deficit in the second game Monday.
“I think we were lackadaisical after we won that first game, so I
was kind of disappointed in that,” he said. “But I was pleased we we
came back and didn’t just cave in, because for a second I thought we
were going to just mail it in. But we had a brief talk and the kids
responded really well.”
On Saturday in the tournament, Abby’s defeated Wilsonville 5-4 in
its first game, then defeated Putnam 5-3.
Against Wilsonville, pitcher Nick Reynolds started for the Tigers
and went five innings and gave up three runs on four hits. Reynolds,
who also hit a home run in the third inning, struck out six and also
gave up six walks before reliever Matt Patrick came in during the
sixth and pitched the final two innings, giving up a run and three
hits, but striking out two to earn the win.
With the game knotted 4-4 in the bottom of the seventh, Abby’s
Trent Boston was walked before Evan Windsor sacrificed him to second
base. That’s when pinch hitter Trevor Terranova hit an RBI single to
give the Tigers the win.
In the game against Putnam, Boston pitched the entire seven innings
and gave up three runs, seven hits and struck out six to go along
with three walks. Case led Abby’s by going 2 for 3 with two RBI in
the win.
After the Tigers suffered a 10-1 loss to Vacaville, Calif. — a team
that not only drew players from three high schools but also had some
junior college players on the squad — Abby’s was set to play in the
third-place game Sunday afternoon, but the day’s games were rained
out.
Overall, the Tigers have won eight of their past 10 games.
“We’ve been really hitting the ball the last couple of weeks and if
we wouldn’t have lost, we would have had won five in a row, so we’re
playing really well,” Case said.
The Tigers return to action today with a 6 p.m. home game against
Forest Grove. The Tigers travel Friday to Corvallis to compete in
the Star Spangled Banner Tournament that runs through Monday. The
Tigers kick off the tournament against Richey’s Market in a 7 p.m.
game. On Saturday, the Tigers take on the Redmond Blue Sox at 9:45
a.m., followed by Sunday’s 12:30 p.m. game against Mid-Valley. The
schedule of the final day of the tournament will be based on how
teams fare in the first three days of their pool play. |
