Bos resigns as St. Paul track coach

Todd Bos, who led the St. Paul High School girls track team to three consecutive state titles, has resigned from his position as the Bucks track and cross country coach.
Bos, a George Fox University graduate and track athlete, arrived in St. Paul in 1992 and served as an assistant track coach when the girls team won a state title. He took over the head coaching duties in 1996 and quickly transformed the girls track team into a winner as the Bucks won Class 1A state championships in 1999, 2000 and 2001.
Bos resigned from the head coaching duties after the 2001 season, but served as an assistant. He took over the reins again a year later and guided the Bucks until this past season, when he led the girls team to a second-place finish and the boys to a third-place finish at the state meet.
Bos said his decision to resign arose from a need for more challenges.
“I needed a change,” he said. “I don’t know how else to say it. For my family, it was a time for change. I was coaching three sports and that was quite a bit. So it got to be the right time.
“I love St. Paul. There’s nothing I dislike about St. Paul. It was all great. It was me just needing a change of scenery. I have nothing but good memories of the community and parents I got to associate and be with.”
St. Paul athletic director Jay Phillips said it was tough to accept Bos’ resignation.
“We’re going to miss him,” he said. “The track program is going to miss him a lot. He did an incredible job and we wish him all the best. Not only was he a great track coach, but he related great to our kids.
“We’re happy for (Bos). He thought it was a time for change, but we’ll miss him because he’s a great guy.”
Bos, who taught math at St. Paul, accepted a math teaching position at Newberg High School. He’ll teach in the Small Schools program — which consists of approximately 350 students in each of five schools — so making the jump from tiny St. Paul, which totals less than 100 students, to Newberg won’t be a monumental task.
“Being from a small school, that appeals to me,” Bos said. “I’m excited to see if I can be successful in that kind of environment.”
In 11 years as the head track coach at St. Paul, Bos coached eight state champion teams and two state championship relay teams. He said his only regret was that he didn’t get a chance to tell this past season’s students that he won’t return to St. Paul next year.
“I don’t feel very good about that,” he said. “But I’ll be working at (the St. Paul Rodeo) and hopefully I’ll see some of them there.”

Notes: Ryan Hardin, St. Paul’s track coach and volunteer assistant basketball coach, resigned from his English teaching and coaching positions to take a job at Westview High School in Beaverton.
