Luckily for the
Abby’s America Legion AAA baseball team, it had built a big lead
before the seventh inning.
With the Tigers ahead 10-1 to start the final inning Thursday at
home against Horizon, Abby’s gave up five runs, but managed to hold
on for a 10-6 victory in the Newberg Abby’s Invitational Tournament.
Abby’s pitcher Trevor Terranova limited Horizon to one run in six
innings before the game turned interesting in the seventh. Reliever
Linden Fisher lasted one-third of an inning before he was replaced
by Trent Boston, who promptly walked the next batter to load the
bases. Horizon responded with a three-run double to close Abby’s
lead to 10-5. Boston gave up an RBI single before shortstop Spencer
Hales threw out a runner at first base to end the game with the
bases loaded for Horizon.
In the final inning, Abby’s coach Frank Baumholtz said he didn’t
want his pitchers to come in with a nine-run lead and simply pitch
without a game plan.
“You’ve got to have a plan and work the plan and just go after
them, so we were a little complacent there in the seventh inning,”
he said. “We stayed the course and got it done and got the win in
our first game (of the tournament).
With Abby’s 8-7 win against Sunset Wednesday, the Tigers have won
two in a row.
“Things are just starting to roll,” Baumholtz said. “Guys,
definitely offensively, are playing with a lot more confidence.”
The Tigers struck offensively in the first inning with three runs,
thanks to a two-RBI double to left field by Terranova before
Mitchell Sturdevant stole home on a wild pitch.
Abby’s tacked on a run in the second when Hales scored on a wild
pitch, before Ryan Wilson hit a two-RBI single up the middle in the
third to give the Tigers a 6-0 lead. After Ryan Myers scored on a
wild pitch in the fifth, Evan Windsor scored off an error in the
sixth before a two-RBI single by Wilson gave the Tigers a 10-1 lead.
The key to the game, though, was the pitching of Terranova.
He limited Horizon to seven hits and struck out six in six innings.
Terranova, who will be a junior at Newberg this season, played in a
single game for the Newberg High School varsity team this year. He
was needed to pitch for Abby’s during the tournament because Matt
Twenge, another Abby’s pitcher, won’t throw for the Tigers this
weekend as he’ll be competing in Vancouver, Wash., in an all-star
game. Another Abby’s pitcher, Levi Fletcher, had thrown extensively
last week, making Terranova a candidate for the start against
Horizon.
“He just threw outstanding,” Baumholtz said. “He’s been playing
really well. It was awesome. He came in and threw strikes and was
able to change speeds, so for a first outing, he was really good.
Plus, he flat-out hit the ball, so it was great to get the spark
like we did. But it was nice to have (Terranova) come up and take
care of business for us because that was a big boost.” |
