On heels of tourney, Abby's on a winning streak |
The Abby’s American
Legion AAA baseball team scored a pair of narrow victories against
Bend during the weekend as it prepares to host its own four-day
tournament this week.
On Saturday in a doubleheader against Bend, the Tigers scored a 6-5
win in eight innings in the first game.
In the critical eighth inning, Mitchell Sturdevant started the
inning by being walked. Spencer Hales sacrificed him to second base
before Emmitt Ackerlund hit the game winning RBI single to give the
Tigers the win.
Abby’s assistant coach David Case, filling in for head coach Frank
Baumholtz during the games, said the victory was “a great win.”
“We battled back and forth,” he said. “We tied it up in the sixth
and came through to win in the bottom of the eighth.”
Sturdevant pitched six innings, struck out seven and walked two
before reliever Linden Fisher came in to close in the seventh and
earn the win. He had one strikeout and a walk.
In the second game, Fisher started for Abby’s and pitched 4 2/3
innings to earn the 8-5 win. Trent Boston, who went 2 for 4 in the
first game, came in to earn the save.
The Tigers broke the game open in the fifth inning, when Boston
started the inning with a single. Brett Case drove him in with a
double — Case’s second RBI of the game — before Sturdevant hit an
RBI double to score Brett Case. Judd Brown, new to the Abby’s team
this week, later hit a pinch hit two-RBI single.
Ackerlund also hit a two-run home run in the fourth inning for
Abby’s.
Earlier in the week, Abby’s suffered a 2-1 loss June 12 to
Tualatin, a squad that made it to the semifinals of this past
season’s Class 6A state baseball tournament before falling 8-5 to
eventual state champion North Medford.
In the loss to the Timberwolves, Fisher pitched a complete game and
gave up two hits, struck out three, walked four and hit one.
While Fisher did his part, Abby’s struggled at the plate and
recorded just three hits in the loss. Brett Case went 1 for 2 with
the team’s lone RBI. Boston and Levi Fletcher had the team’s other
hits.
Abby’s returns to action today (Wednesday) with a 6 p.m. game at
Sunset before it opens the Abby’s Invitational on Thursday. The
squad will host seven other teams — Vacaville, Calif., Horizon, Rex
Putnam, Wilsonville, the Treasure Valley Stars, Hillsboro and
Milwaukie — in a pool format.
Games will be played both at Newberg High School and George Fox
University. The championship game is set for 3 p.m. Sunday at
Newberg High School. Admission is $3 for adults and $2 for students. |
