With one head
coaching position at Newberg High School filled, one more remains.
The head volleyball coaching position at the school is the last
vacant head coaching job Newberg athletic director Tim Burke has to
fill this summer.
The position became open when three-year head coach Jamie Schantin
resigned earlier this year to accept a teaching position in the
Salem-Keizer School District.
“We haven’t moved on that yet,” Burke said. “We’ve interviewed six
people for that and hope to have that finished up here (this) week.”
Burke said he had three more applicants to interview for the
position before a decision would be made.
Burke, however, must also fill several assistant coaching
positions, including an assistant cross country coach to serve under
head cross country coach Bruce Sinkbeil.
Keith Marshall, who held that position, will take up new duties as
the head freshman boys basketball coach. Scot Valway, one of the
assistant football coaches, resigned to take a job in the Parkrose
School District, creating an opening in the football program also.
Burke, who said his deadline to fill all the positions is June 30,
added that he is still searching for a junior varsity boys soccer
coach and a junior varsity softball coach. Burke said he might also
need a freshman softball coach if there’s enough interest to field a
team. |
