A pair of Newberg
boys water polo teams won the regional competition last weekend to
qualify for the Junior Olympics later this summer.
Newberg’s 14-and-under team posted a 2-0 record at Curtis High
School in Tacoma, Wash. Newberg’s 18-under-team finished with a
3-0-1 record to win the tournament. Both teams will travel to San
Jose, Calif., in July for the Junior Olympics.
This past weekend, Newberg had several players who had made the
Northwest Zone Team, compromised of the best players from Oregon,
Washington and Hawaii. Those players — Meghan O’Halloran, Keilani
Ladrini, Pam Ladrini, Adrienne Cheney, Cray Rogers, Chase Hansen and
Craig Cheney — competed in different tryouts across the western
United States.
O’Halloran and the Ladrinis tried out for the Youth National Team
in Federal Way, Wash. Adrienne Cheney, who was Oregon’s most
valuable player at this past season’s state tournament, played at a
youth tourney in Kearns, Utah. Rogers and Hansen traveled to
Berkeley, Calif., for a cadet tournament and Craig Cheney traveled
to Mission Viejo, Calif., for a tournament.
Both Rogers and Craig Cheney qualified as one of the top-40 players
in the 100-player field.
“It’s a great opportunity for these kids,” said Newberg coach Jim
McMaster. “They were chosen as the best in their zones, which is
good in itself. They then got a chance to play against some of the
top players in the U.S. and they definitely learn a lot when they go
to those.” |
