Core group to lead Tigers, coach says |
If the Newberg High
School girls track team is going to vie for the Pacific Conference
district track championship, a core group of four athletes will have
to play a vital role.
Alysha Beck, Amber Rozcicha, Kirstin Lee and Sarah Wolfer all
competed in the state meet last season and Newberg coach Monte
Bradley said they’ll all have to compete well if the Tigers are to
take down favorite Canby at districts, which runs today (Wednesday)
and Thursday at Linfield College.
“It’s the same group of girls who have been doing it all year,” he
said. “It’s a group of girls who went to state last year and we have
a lot of experience coming back from last year, as far as the girls
team is concerned. All the top girls have all been to the state meet
and have all been a part of last year’s district championship team,
so they should handle themselves very well at the district track
meet.”
Beck qualified for both the 100 and 300 hurdles events at the state
meet last season, Wolfer ran in the 200 and 4 x 100 relay team, Lee
competed in the shot and Rozcicha competed in both the 800 and the 4
x 400 team.
This season, Beck ranks second in 100 hurdles (16.07) and leads the
conference in the 300 hurdles (47.86). She also ranks fourth in the
triple jump (33-0). Wolfer ranks sixth in the 100 (13.44) and
seventh in the 200 (27.94) and sixth in the pole vault (8-6).
Rozcicha is the Pacific Conference leader in the 800 (2:22.22) and
ranks fourth in the 1,500 (5:04.5). Lee ranks second in the discus
(137-4) and second in the shot put (38-9.5).
Newberg also has senior Hali Bellisario, who is ranked No. 2 in the
conference in the javelin (126-0). Amanda Miller is ranked fifth in
the long jump (15-9) and Michelle Hildreth is sixth (15-8.5).
Bradley said he couldn’t predict where the Tigers will finish at the
district meet.
“They’re just a good girls track team and if all the girls compete
really, really well and do the things they’re capable of doing, I
think they should be very competitive — in the top three, I would
say,” he said.
The Newberg boys team went 0-5 in the conference this past season
and doesn’t have a conference leader in any event. In fact, Newberg
has three athletes whose highest ranking in the league is third.
Clint Cardwell ranks third in the 1,500 (4:11.5), Chris Merdink
ranks third in the shot put (49-3) and the discus (140-8), and Jeff
Winn ranks third in the javelin (186-7).
This year has been a struggle for the boys team, Bradley, the coach
at Newberg since 1976, said.
“If you’ve been at a program as long as I have, you know you’re
going to have great years, good years and not so good years,” he
said. “And this year, athletically speaking, it’s just a very young
group of kids with very little experience. Hopefully, they’ll have a
good track meet as individuals and compete well, though, so they can
build on that for next year.” |
