Newberg softball team gains early lead, but falters
CANBY — Much like the game itself, the Newberg High School softball team’s offense got out to a quick start.
But by the end, it was Canby that stood alone in a 13-4 win Wednesday over the Tigers.
After the game got started 30 minutes earlier than scheduled, Newberg shot out to a quick 2-0 lead after Casey Bearden’s two-RBI double in the first inning.
Canby responded in the bottom of the first with three runs of its own, followed by a six-run outburst in the second inning to put Newberg in a 9-2 hole.
In the top of the third, Newberg’s Brittany Hopp, who was 2 for 3 in the game, laid down a bunt and sprinted all the way to third base on a two-base throwing error by the Cougars (5-6 Pacific Conference).  Lauren Casey later delivered a sacrifice squeeze bunt to score Hopp.
Newberg (2-9) scored its final run of the game in the sixth on Bearden’s RBI double to left field. Bearden ended the game going 2 for 3 with two doubles and a pair of RBI.
Newberg had beaten the Cougars 6-4 earlier this season. The difference Wednesday was Canby’s 16 hits and Newberg’s five defensive errors, Newberg coach Kelly Johnson said.
“The first time we played them, our defense was very strong,” she said. “We just need to play the balls that are close and have more effort on them by diving for the ball.”
Newberg entered Wednesday’s game off a 4-2 home loss to Tigard, which scored all four of its runs in the top of the fifth inning on six consecutive hits. Newberg came back in the bottom of the fifth and scored two runs. After Courtney Hirte doubled, Roxanne Rinkes and Megan Cheslock hit back-to-back RBI singles, but Newberg left two runners in scoring position that could have tied the game when Jessie Banton’s hard shot to left field was caught and Lauren Casey’s groundout ended the inning.
The Tigers return to action Monday with a 5 p.m. game at Forest Grove.
