Maerz leads Newberg softball honorees list
Newberg High School senior Carrie Maerz was a unanimous selection as Pacific Conference first team catcher to lead a list of five NHS players.
Maerz, who played shortstop for the past three seasons before moving to catcher this year, had a .345 batting average and .345 on-base percentage. Maerz will attend Pacific University this fall and play softball.
Junior Brittany Hopp was selected to the conference’s first team as a utility player. Hopp primarily played center field, but also played catcher and shortstop. She hit .286 and her on-base percentage was .396 this past season.
Sophomore Casey Bearden was second-team all conference pick as a pitcher. Bearden hit .258 for the Tigers and had a 3.78 ERA in 87 innings. She also struck out 47 batters for the Tigers this season.
Seniors Nicole Davis and Jessie Banton received honorable mention accolades for Newberg this season. Banton, who will attend the University of Oregon this fall, was a first baseman; Davis, who will attend Oregon State University, was a second baseman.
With just six teams in the Pacific Conference, the league shrunk from nine teams due to the reclassification of most of the schools this past season. Five Newberg players receiving postseason awards seemed a high number, especially considering the Tigers finished in last place (2-13) in the conference. The Tigers ended the season with an overall record of 4-21.
“Eliminating a few teams from the league definitely helped us out,” Newberg coach Kelly Johnson said. “We beat Forest Grove and they’re in the (semifinals of the state tournament), but I think the girls definitely had their moments this year. It was just holding on to those and keeping up the intensity level no matter who we’re playing. The better teams tend to come out and perform at their level no matter what level their opponents perform. We tended to rise and fall depending on the opposition.”
