OSHKOSH, Wisc. -
Sophomore Joel Krebs gave the George Fox University Bruins their
second national men’s javelin champion in four years with a throw of
198-8 Saturday at the NCAA Division III National Track and Field
Championships at the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh’s J.J. Keller
Field at Titan Stadium.
Krebs’ throw broke the previous Keller Field record of 191-2 by
Nate Brown of the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 2006. Competing
in flight two of the first round, he recorded his eventual winning
throw on his first attempt, then had to sweat out all subsequent
challenges to his mark. The closest anyone came to him was a 195-11
by Ken Ciolek of the State University of New York-Brockport, who
also posted his best mark on his first throw of the meet. Ciolek
(210-6) and Krebs (210-0) had been ranked as the top two throwers in
the nation entering the weekend.
George Fox’s previous javelin champion was Matt Gassaway, who won
the 2004 title as a junior with a school-record throw of 215-10.
They are the only two Bruins to win NCAA individual championships
since the school’s athletics program became eligible for NCAA
competition in 1999.
Krebs, who finished third in last year’s javelin nationals, earned
All-America status and 10 points toward his team’s score. Coupled
with the six points earned by Ben Dillow for finishing third in the
decathlon the day before, George Fox collected 16 total points and
tied for 18th nationally with Mississippi College, Lincoln
University (Pa.), Illinois Wesleyan University, and the University
of Dubuque. The men’s national champion was the University of
Wisconsin-La Crosse with 99 team points. |
