Senior Levi Fletcher was voted to the
Pacific Conference first team as a pitcher last week in a vote by
the six conference coaches.
In all, four Newberg players earned accolades. Along with Fletcher,
senior Thomas Lee was a second-team selection as an infielder,
junior Trent Boston was a second-team selection as an infielder and
Brett Case was a second-team selection as a catcher.
Newberg finished in last place in the six-team conference this past
season at 3-12. The Tigers were 7-19 overall and ended the season on
a four-game losing streak. The Tigers also suffered several close
losses. In fact, five of Newberg’s league losses were by three runs
or less; two more losses came by four runs.
“It was nice to have several guys voted to the all-league teams,”
Newberg coach Frank Baumholtz said. “Even though we struggled it
shows that other coaches acknowledge some of our guys. We were in
many ball games and we just didn’t get the timely hit when we needed
it. One or two hits in critical situations could have changed the
whole complexion of our season.
“Momentum is huge in baseball. When you bunch hits together it
becomes contagious. These guys were a great bunch of kids. My
coaching staff and I enjoyed having the opportunity to coach them
for the past four years.”
Fletcher, who was also an honorable mention all-state selection and
chosen to play in the State/Metro all-star series in June, was 3-3
(2.93 ERA) in seven starts this season for the Tigers. He struck out
49 batters, walked 12, gave up 54 hits and struck out an average of
7.98 batters per game.
Fletcher was nearly as dominant in the batter’s box for the Tigers.
He hit .404 (18 singles, two doubles and a home run) and had seven
RBI. Fletcher also had a .500 slugging percentage.
Case hit .313 for the Tigers with 13 hits. He also had four RBI and
scored six times.
Boston, the team’s third baseman, hit .344 with six singles, four
doubles and 10 RBI for the Tigers.
Lee, a senior shortstop, hit .341 for the Tigers during conference
play. He had 15 hits (14 singles and a triple) to go along with five
RBI. |
