Dillow, Forbes sit in top-10 at Day 1 of nationals |

OSHKOSH, Wisc. —
With half the events completed, George Fox teammates Ben Dillow and
Ryan Forbes stood eighth and tenth respectively in the decathlon
after a blustery first day of competition Thursday in the NCAA
Division III national track championships the University of
Wisconsin-Oshkosh.
Dillow, who placed second in the nationals two years ago but missed
all of 2006 after knee surgery, scored 3,532 total points. Forbes,
an eighth-place finisher as a freshman last year, has 3,422 points.
The leader as of Thursday was Kyle Steiner of the University of
Wisconsin-Stevens Point with 3,783.
Dillow placed 10th in the 100-meter dash (11.22 seconds, 813
points), 10th in the long jump (21-feet, 2.75-inches, 691 points),
fourth in the shot put (39-2.5, 603 points), eighth in the high jump
(6-1.25, 679 points) and eighth in the 400 meter dash (51.51, 746
points). Forbes was seventh in the 100 (11.14, 832 points), 13th in
the long jump (20-9.25, 659 points), eighth in the shot put
(37-0.25, 563 points), 13th in the high jump (5-9.75, 602 points),
and sixth in the 400 (51.06, 766 points).
The decathlon continued Friday with the 110 hurdles, discus, pole
vault, javelin and the 1,500, but results were unavailable at press
time.
The only other Bruin scheduled to compete Thursday was Victoria
Black in the women’s pole vault, but bad weather forced the women’s
and men’s pole vault competitions to be postponed until Friday.
Black, who is in her first NCAA national meet, stands 17th
nationally in the pole vault with a height of 11-9.75,second on the
all-time George Fox list to ex-Bruin All-American Heather Hunt.
Also on Friday, the Bruins’ Rachel Giffey-Brohaugh was entered in
the women’s 800, competing in the second heat of the preliminaries,
with the finals set for today (Saturday). She is 13th in the 800
with a school-record time of 2:12.92. This will be her second
appearance in the NCAA nationals; she competed in the 800 as a
freshman in 2005. |
