Newberg girls team breaks drought, finishes 14th at state |
WOODBURN — The
Newberg High School girls golf team finished 14th Tuesday and became
the first squad in school history to play at the OSAA Class 6A state
golf tournament.
Newberg’s team of four golfers shot a final score of 857 (281 over
par) over 72 holes of play at the OGA Golf Course. The winning team,
St. Mary’s, shot 112 over par with a final score of 688.
“We kind of approached the season by trying to improve every day
and when you do that things kind of take care of themselves,”
Newberg coach Branden Thompson said. “I thought we had a pretty good
chance (to qualify for state) if we just played up to our
capabilities. We were extremely happy to extend our season past
districts and on to state.”
The team qualified for the state meet after its second-place finish
at the Pacific Conference tournament the previous week. Tualatin,
with a score of 736, won. Newberg finished second with a score of
852.
At the state meet, senior Holly Gordon shot 23 above par on Monday
before shooting 34 above Tuesday, including a birdie on hole No. 15.
Senior Sarah Shaffer shot 27 above par on Monday and 34 above
Tuesday. Senior Heather Nicholas shot 46 above par on Monday, then
shaved off 12 strokes Tuesday to shoot a 34 on Tuesday. Sophomore
Madison Bible shot a 43 above par Monday before she cut three
strokes Tuesday to shoot a total of 40 above par Tuesday.
Senior Ashley Foss was 68 above par Monday before she shot 69 above
par on Tuesday to finish with a score of 137 above par for the
tournament.
The appearance of a Newberg golfer at the state tournament broke a
14-year drought. In 1993, Charlotte Londorf qualified individually
for the tournament and finished in a six-way tie for sixth by
shooting a 165 at the East Course of Glendoveer Golf Club.
The only other player from Newberg to play in a state tournament
was Leta Brown. As a senior in 1991 she shot a 159 to place second
behind winner Amy Lawrence of Central Catholic. |
