ORANGE, Calif. —
Chapman’s Devin Drag threw a seven-hit shutout Wednesday to help
eliminate the George Fox baseball team from the NCAA Division III
west regional baseball tournament with a 3-0 victory.
The Bruins, making their sixth appearance in the playoffs in eight
seasons of NCAA eligibility, bowed out of the tournament without a
win for the first time since their first playoffs in 2000. The
University of Texas-Dallas defeated George Fox 5-3 in the first game
of the day.
Tournament host Chapman, which had a first-round bye in the
seven-team regional, took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the opening
inning. Ryan Cavan doubled to left and then advanced to third on a
wild pitch that catcher Ryan Fobert blocked but then had trouble
finding. Cavan later scored on Tyler Dean’s high-bouncing chopper to
third.
The Panthers got their final two runs in the fourth. Patrick Ohail
walked with one out and was forced at second on a grounder to short
by Matt Pearson. Kurt Yacko doubled into the left field corner, and
it appeared as if Daniel Downs’ throw from left would beat Pearson
at the plate, but the throw took a high hop and kicked off Fobert’s
shoulder, allowing Pearson to score from first. Jake Hurst then
lined a single to left to score Yacko, who had advanced to third on
the play at the plate.
That was more than enough for Drag, who improved to 14-0 and is the
national wins leader in college baseball this season. He allowed
nothing but singles to the Bruins, walked two and struck out five in
his third complete game of the season. He was helped by an
inning-ending line drive double play off the bat of Pat Bailey in
the fifth and a game-ending ground double play in the ninth.
George Fox right-hander Josh Burch (4-3) pitched suffered the loss.
In five innings, he allowed five hits with three walks and four
strikeouts. He and relievers Kyle Johnson and Jeff Wheeler did not
allow a Chapman hit during the final four innings.
Bruin designated hitter Nic Chapin, making his first start after
missing most of the season with an injured shoulder, had two of the
Bruins’ seven hits. Yacko, with a pair of doubles, had the only
multi-hit game for the Panthers.
George Fox ended with a 30-11 record. |
