Tigers fall to 0-4 with loss to Foxes |
One thing is for sure: the
Newberg High School softball team won’t win too many games if its
offense doesn’t come to life.
The Tigers couldn’t collect a hit in a 6-1 loss at Forest Grove. On
Wednesday, the Tigers racked up four hits in a 4-1 home loss to
Silverton.
Two of the hits Wednesday came in the sixth inning, followed by one
more in the seventh.
“We’ve got to wake our bats up,” said Newberg coach Kelly Johnson.
“We just didn’t have the hits strung together. It was about the
sixth inning ... when we finally did string (hits) together.”
Against Forest Grove, Newberg also committed four errors.
“We had some defensive struggles,” Johnson said. “I think we all
left, the coaches and team included, left the game feeling like we
could have played a lot better, a lot differently. In the end, those
little mistakes added up.
“Forest Grove is a good team. However, we had some errors to help
them out. I think it was a combination of their sticks, their
defense and our errors that led to our loss.”
In the loss to Silverton, the Foxes scored a run in the first
inning, another in the fifth, followed by two runs in the sixth to
take a 4-0 lead. In the bottom of the sixth, Shelby Douglas roped a
triple to right field to lead the inning off before Brittney Hopp’s
RBI single gave the Tigers their lone run.
Freshman Tiger pitcher Casey Bearden suffered the loss, giving up
seven hits and striking out two.
“We had some great defensive plays,” Johnson said. “We had
(Bearden) on the mound throwing well and we had some good defense
behind her for the most part.”
Newberg returns to action Monday with a 4:30 p.m. home game against
McMinnville. The Tigers will also play a make-up game at 4:30 p.m.
Tuesday at Woodburn. |
