MONMOUTH — The Newberg High School boys cross country team scored 179 to place sixth Saturday at the Festival of Champions at Western Oregon University.
“We had some kids run very well,” Newberg coach Bruce Sinkbeil said. “Getting sixth in this meet is very good considering there was another division below us with another 18 teams.”
The Tigers were led by improvements of their five runners who all improved upon their times after competing in this event last season.  The least a Newberg runner improved was 33 seconds; the most was one minute, 10 seconds by Danny Minor.
Alessandro Pia led the Newberg contingent by placing 15th overall (16:27), beating out his time last season (17:30). Clint Cardwell placed 28th (16:49), an improvement of 39 seconds. Santana Alvarez placed 30th (16:50), an improvement of 1:01. Tyler Magill placed 52nd overall (17:27), good for a 56-second improvement. Minor was 54th (17:33) and Tanner Clark was 80th (17:58) in a field of 130. Clark’s time was a 33-second improvement from last year.
“Our top three boys ran exceptionally well as they ran (an) even pace or faster throughout the race,” Sinkbeil said.
The Newberg girls team placed 15th out of 21 teams with 331 points.
Anna Thomas was Newberg’s top finisher, placing 27th (21:22) and improving 1:46 from last season’s race. Amy Thorp placed 28th (21:22), followed by Courtnee Roberts at 102nd place (23:57), Katie Hirons at 115th place (24:50), Kristi Werner at 116th place (24:52) and Ryan Cook at 125th place (26:03). Cook shaved off 7:19 from her time last season.
“The girls showed tremendous improvement with (Thorp) and (Thomas) getting under 22:00 and (Roberts) under 24:00,” Sinkbeil said.
The Tigers return to action today (Wednesday) with a 4:30 p.m. meet at Putnam against Tigard.

Notes: The Newberg junior varsity boys team placed seventh out of 11 teams in its meet by scoring 147 points. Stephen York paced the Tigers with his 20th-place finish (18:48), followed by Cody Evans (22nd, 18:52), Sasha Kapleev (26th, 18:55), Jimmy Avgerakis (35th, 19:05), Danny Rice (45th, 19:39), Philip Gravatt (45th, 19:39), Taylor Johnston (56th, 20:19), Thomas VanHevelingen (58th, 20:21), Aaron Sprunger (60th, 20:23), Clark Weber (68th, 20:30), Mark Zakrevsky (75th, 20:49), Derrick Swanson (85th, 21:34), Christian Hayes (93rd, 22:47), Andrew Launder (94th, 22:53), James Hines (96th, 23:25) and Jonathon Insley (100th, 24:30). In the two-mile race, Hector Gouger was 46th (13:58).
