Schools meet AYP, but district does not |
This year’s Adequate Yearly
Progress (AYP) report, mandated by No Child Left Behind (NCLB) and
required of each school by the state and federal government, were
released last week. For the first time every elementary and middle
school in the Newberg School District met AYP, although the district
as a whole did not meet standards.
The reason is simple: under NCLB every minority group of every
school within a district has to meet AYP. Newberg High School had
several groups not meeting standards.
Less than 50 percent of students with disabilities, limited English
proficiency and of Hispanic origin failed to pass the
English/language arts part of the test. A majority of students with
disabilities, of Hispanic origin, or who are economically
disadvantaged failed to pass the mathematics portion of the test.
Not everything was bleak. Mountain View Middle School, which hadn’t
met AYP for several years, did so in the 2006-2007 school year. The
overall improvement was 10.98 percent over the 2005-2006 school
year. Hispanic students improved their score on the English section
by 21.56 percent, students with disabilities improved by 24.46
percent, economically disadvantaged students improved by 13.45
percent, and students with limited English proficiency improved by
14.39 percent. |
