Methodist church slates Christian mission conference |
The United Methodist
Women’s School of Christian Mission will be held July 12-15 at
George Fox University.
Sue Chambers, district vice president for the western
district of United Methodist Women, said the conference has a
history going back more than 100 years. She added that of the three
classes taught every year one always covers scripture and this year
the conference will take a close up look at music in scripture in
the music and mission class.
She said that the study goes through the hymns and considers how
they relate to scripture and how the church has evolved over the
years.
A second class looks at current affairs; this year it will be
globalization. She said she expects the speaker to discuss how it
“affects us and our world and how we perceive other cultures.”
The third class covers a different religion or a country; this year
it is Israel/Palestine.
Chambers said she is always surprised at how timely the classes
are. “These studies are selected five to seven years before we do
them,” she said.
She described the process as having to find somebody to cover a
specific subject, who then has to write the study, write the
accompanying book, and have it peer reviewed before the study can be
taught. |
