Expansion will allows clothing closet to grow

Helping fulfill the needs of the community.
That is the reason behind why members of the Seventhday Adventist church are building a Community Service Center near their church at 530 Edgewood Drive.
Coordinators of the building project broke ground June 5 at the site and already concrete has been poured for the foundation.
“Thank you so much Lord,” said Pastor Timothy Mayne at the dedication ceremony. He added that the project was a practical way to preach Jesus’ name.
The building, said Elaine Connor, one of the coordinators of the project, will be the hub of the church community providing space for a clothing closet already housed in the church. It might also house a food pantry that would offer food for those in need at Christmas and Thanksgiving.
Once a month the church opens its closets to community members who need clothing and accessories. To provide that service, the clothing, packed in boxes, is removed from a small storage room in the church and hung on racks to make it easier for people make a selection. The clothing is then moved to the church gymnasium.
The process is cumbersome and time consuming, coordinators said. It also limits how often the church can offer the service.
The new center would allow the coordinators of the clothing pantry to leave the items in one place, so it could be open and available to community members once a week, Connor said. She added that the group would coordinate with Love INC (In the Name of Christ) to let people know the service is available.
The building will cost about $150,000 to construct. Church members have been raising funds — and praying — for the project for several years, Connor said.
Sharyl Ashley, the interior designer who provided color schemes and offered advice on materials to use, said the idea was to make the space comfortable and pleasing to church members and visitors alike. “It’s an exciting project to be involved with,” she said.
