Bob Morter -- Music as ministry
Bob Morter figures he’s played a guitar in bands as far back as high school when he strummed on the stage at the Old Fashioned Festival. A 1980 graduate of Newberg High School, Morter played in one band or another for more than two decades.
In 2001 he became a Christian and his music changed. “I went through some life changes and realized God was the only way,” he said.
With an acoustic guitar in hand, Morter penned “I Can’t Explain,” and in nine months compiled a CD of Christian contemporary music recorded in a studio in Monroe, Wash.
A CD release and concert will begin at 7 p.m. Monday at Christian Gospel Assemblies, 14000 N.E. Highway 240. Doors open at 6:30 p.m.
“I wrote all the songs with help from God because he inspired them all,” Morter said. “I changed my music style and things have gone well.”
Morter is using his talent with a guitar in other ways. Last year he signed up with World Vision Ministry, a group that finds sponsors to provide funds for long- and short-term assistance in countries like Ethiopia.
His mission? To use his guitar to bring music to others and use his performances to help find sponsors for children in Third World countries.
In the past few years, Morter said, he’s cut back on the time spent at his other job — NTP Distribution. He said that, for years, he was focused on building his business. Now he’s spending more time with his music and ministry.
His focus has centered on becoming more well known nationally by distributing his music on contemporary Christian music stations.
“The CD has only been out a couple weeks,” he said Thursday morning. “I have to do all the promotion myself. Just an hour ago I downloaded (onto a Web site) the song I want played.”
The producer of his CD, IndieHeaven, represents 400 Christian artists across the nation trying to get airplay, he said.
