A group of 12 visitors
from Newberg’s sister city of Poysdorf, Austria, will visit the area
next month, city officials announced this week.
“They’ll be meeting with the mayor and council, have a tour of the
city and go sightseeing,” City Administrator Jim Bennett said.
The group will meet with Mayor Bob Andrews and members of the
Newberg city council, as well as representatives of the business
community and winemaking industry. Also on hand will be former mayor
Bob Stewart, who traveled to Austria last August to sign the sister
city agreement.
“They’ll be arriving Sept. 23, and staying at Wine Country Bed and
Breakfast,” said Lynn Weigant, owner of Windrose Conference Center,
who is heading the reception committee.
The delegation will include Karl Wilfing, the mayor of Poysdorf,
and his wife, several Poysdorf council members and Margaret Schukart,
18, one of Poysdorf’s “wine princesses.”
Similar to the members of Newberg’s Old Fashioned Festival court,
these princesses promote their town — not just in its annual
festival, but at trade and tourism events around the country.
Poysdorf (pop. 5,160) is located in the northeastern corner of
Austria, in the heart of its “Weinvertel” or wine country. Since the
Middle Ages, the area has been noted as the home of the Gruner
Veltliner grape variety, producing a dry white wine similar to Pinot
Gris.
While the Poysdorf delegation will visit local wineries and discuss
wine tourism and marketing with the business community, they will
also take the chance to see other scenic corners of Oregon, Weigant
said.
“We’ll be going to Mount Hood on the 26th, which is actually Mr.
Wilfing’s birthday, and stopping at Multnomah Falls and Crown Point
along the way,” she said. “The next day, we’re visiting the coast.”
The delegation will make time for an excursion to Portland, but the
details have proved problematic, Weigant added.
“The one thing they really want to do is go on a tour of Nike
headquarters. We’re trying to arrange that, but it’s been
difficult,” she said. “The company doesn’t seem to allow visitors to
their Beaverton campus as much as they used to.”
The delegation will also visit George Fox University and the A-Dec,
Inc. campus, and a farewell banquet is scheduled for Sept. 29 when
the group returns to Austria.
“We’ll be meeting with the Austrian consul and Governor Kitzhaber
has been invited as well,” Weigant added.
The group’s visit is also largely sponsored by Lil’ Cooperstown
Grill. |
