KEIZER — Twila Tschan of
Newberg won the title of Oregon’s Junior Miss at the 51st annual
Oregon’s Junior Miss competition Aug. 11 at McNary High School.
The competition came at the end of a week of rehearsals and
practice.
Tschan, who will be a senior at Newberg High School this fall, was
awarded a total of $3,250 in scholarships. She will also represent
Oregon in the America’s Junior Miss National Finals in June.
The eight contestants were evaluated on a 10-minute physical
fitness routine, a talent performance, a 10-minute standing
interview and a “self-expression” session, where they had to answer
an impromptu question. Academic grades were factored at 20 percent.
“What they’re looking
for is a well-rounded young lady ... who is involved in her
community and her school,” said Joanie Gilbert, state chairman of
the Oregon’s Junior Miss program.
“Twila is one of those who is very well-rounded. She succeeded in
her interview ... she has a 4.0 (GPA) ... and she has fabulous stage
presence,” Gilbert said. “When Twila is on stage, she just shines —
she wowed the audience with her talent.”
Tschan, who has been singing since she was 5, performed a vocal
solo, “Ain’t Misbehavin’,” for the talent event.
“It was just a great way to meet with other ... young women my age
around the state,” Tschan said of the competition. “You get together
with all these intellectual, talented young women.”
As Oregon’s Junior Miss, Tschan will be the state’s representative
for not only the America’s Junior Miss Program, but also the “Be
Your Best Self” program. A platform of America’s Junior Miss, the
program promotes literacy, all-around excellence and self-esteem in
young people.
“I get to go into schools and talk about what it means to be your
own self,” Tschan said. Of the Junior Miss program, she said she was
“really excited to be able to represent Oregon and be able to
promote a program that ... is not that well known in our area.” |
