The Old Fashioned Festival will open Thursday, bringing with it
food, games, parades, carnivals rides, various traditions and an
interesting history.
The Old Fashioned Festival hit the town of Newberg in 1981, taking
the place of the Old Fashioned Days festival, which ran for three
years. The original festival, presented by the Newberg Berrians
under the name Berrian Festival or Berrian Farmeroo, ran almost
yearly from the 1920s to the 1970s.
The festival has hosted a variety of interesting events over the
years, including a beard-growing contest, elephant rides and bed
races.
Other past events have included the State Steelball Tournament,
acrobatics and water ski shows, dog races, a salmon feed and the
Oregon Open Barbecue Championship.
Highlights this year
will include the children’s parade and the queen’s coronation
Thursday; the Grand Festival Parade and the Saturday Night
Spectacular, featuring fireworks and music from the Boomer Band; and
the Cruise In and Car Show and the 27th annual Newberg Community
Hymn Sing Sunday.
The Rotary Pancake Feed will serve blueberry pancakes Saturday and
Sunday mornings. Vendors and the carnival will be open throughout
the weekend.
The festival will also feature various musicians and entertainers,
including the Ben Rice Blues Band, Lori Willcuts & Friends and the
Oregon Trail Band.
Local talent will be highlighted throughout the performances; of
the more than 20 festival entertainment groups, the furthest
travelers are from Portland, according to festival entertainment
chairman Jon Holt.
Performance venues include the Memorial Park main stage, the
children’s main stage and Renne athletic field.
The festival theme, “Something Old, Something New,” will be most
evident in the decoration of floats and horses in the parade,
according to festival treasurer and co-chairman Don Parrish.
From the fireworks to the parade, from the pancake feed to the
entertainment, from the hymn sing to Thursday’s dog costume contest
— the 27th Annual Old Fashioned Festival will include a smorgasbord
of different activities. And while there may not be wagon rides, bed
races or African lion shows, there should be something fun for
everyone. |
