Relay for Life in Newberg this weekend
By Amanda Newman, Newberg Graphic Intern
The 2007 Relay for Life of Newberg begins at 6 p.m. Friday at the Newberg High School track, and support has grown for the annual cancer research and treatment fund-raiser, sponsored by the American Cancer Society.
Participation this year has increased to 43 teams, and donations stand at more than $46,000, according to Linda Vondrachek, a 3-year team captain.
“This year, for the first time, the McMinnville Relay For Life has challenged us to line the edge of the track with quarters,” Vondrachek said. “We estimate that should raise an additional $4,000.”
Joining this year’s event are relay teams from Joan Austin Elementary School and Veritas Academy. The teams are in support of Maddy Cooper, a Joan Austin student, and Marshall McGill, a Veritas student, both diagnosed with cancer.
Also new to the relay this year are teams from Newberg Garbage and Recycling, Freeman Manufacturing, the George Fox University nursing program, and teams from Dundee and Dayton.
The public is invited to attend and show its support at the relay. Following the opening ceremonies, a survivor’s lap will be held at 6:30 p.m., followed by a performance from local band Ben Rice and the Youth of Blues. Concessions from Coyote Joe’s Coffee and the Knights of Columbus will also be available.
Visitors are also encouraged to place bids in the silent auction fundraiser, which is held in the NHS Commons during the relay. The first table closes at 9:30 p.m. Friday, with the remainder of the auction concluding 11:30 a.m. Saturday morning.
At 9:30 p.m. Friday, the relay will pause for the luminaria   ceremony, in which cancer victims are remembered with paper candle lanterns. These lanterns will illuminate the track as participants continue the relay throughout the night.
“There’s one team member on the track at all times — usually it’s one-hour shifts,” Vondrachek added. “The relay finishes at 2 p.m. the next day.”
