Four local individuals will be honored June 12 for their
contributions to the community at the seventh annual Hearts of Gold
Celebration luncheon.
Sponsored and presented by the Providence Newberg Health
Foundation, the luncheon has a dual purpose: to honor members of the
community for their volunteer work and to raise money for the Mike
Olberding Education Fund.
The 2007 Hearts of Gold honorees are outgoing George Fox University
President David Brandt, Fisher Ernst Group/Ernst Hardware general
manager Verl Scheibe, and Tom and Linda Vondrachek, owners of Jem
100.
According to Mike
Antrim, senior public affairs and marketing coordinator for
Providence Newberg Medical Center, the Hearts of Gold honorees are
selected by a committee for showing “great volunteerism in ... and
pride for the community.”
Antrim described the honorees as “individuals who are making a
difference in Newberg through their personal passions.”
Brandt will retire next month after nine years as president of the
university. During his tenure he has guided the school through
considerable growth, including the expansion and addition of
programs, facilities and locations.
Brandt has led the Oregon Independent College Foundation and the
Oregon Independent Colleges Association, has served on the
Providence Newberg Medical Center ministry board and is a member of
the Newberg Earlybird Rotary Club. Following his retirement, he and
his wife, Melva, will join two sons and four grandchildren on the
east coast.
Scheibe, a resident of St. Paul, is a longtime employee of St. Paul
Ernst Hardware (also known as Fisher Implements), where he was made
partner in 1990. A former hospital corpsman in the United States
Navy, he served as a volunteer firefighter and paramedic for the St.
Paul Rural Fire District from 1980 to 2005.
Scheibe has served on the boards of the Newberg Rotary Club,
Chehalem Valley Chamber of Commerce and Providence Newberg Hospital.
He was also a member of the campaign cabinet for the hospital’s “The
Time is Now” campaign, which raised funds to help build Providence
Newberg Medical Center.
The Vondracheks have owned and operated Jem 100 since 1988. Linda
has also worked for the Newberg Graphic for many years. The
Vondracheks have supported the Newberg School District’s Partnership
in Education program and have sponsored several local sports teams
and two American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life teams.
The Vondracheks participate in the Citizen Advisory Police
Committee and the Newberg Downtown Association. In 2001, they were
awarded the Chamber Business People of the Year award.
“We give them a nice plaque and it’s an opportunity to shine the
light on them for a little bit,” Antrim said of the honorees. “It’s
important that we recognize the people that are doing good things in
the community. But usually, the people that are chosen (as Hearts of
Gold honorees) are the kind of people who don’t want recognition.”
Past Hearts of Gold honorees have included Newberg Faith in Action
volunteers, local police departments, breast cancer survivors, local
volunteer firefighters, Dr. Mary Foster, Ken and Joan Austin, George
Lowe and the beneficiary’s namesake, Mike Olberding.
The luncheon committee’s goal this year is to raise $40,000 to
support the Mike Olberding Education Fund, which helps nurses and
other hospital employees obtain advanced degrees and specialized
certifications by contributing toward fees for workshops,
conferences and certification examinations.
The Hearts of Gold Luncheon will take place in George Fox
University’s Klages Dining Hall from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. The
event will be emceed by Scott Tom of KISM-FM. Tickets are $30. For
