Searching for Real World acceptance

Dundee resident Jake D’Angelo has a somewhat unusual goal: to be voted in as the seventh cast member for the 20th season of MTV’s “The Real World.” However, he needs help.
The Real World, a reality television show, features seven strangers who live in a house together for three months while being filmed. Season 20, rumored to be the last, will begin filming next year in an as-yet undisclosed location.
Since its 1992 inception as a “sociological experiment,” the show has selected participants based on video submissions. This year, the first six cast members were selected by the network in the traditional method. The seventh, for the first time, will be chosen via the Internet.
Open to any U.S. citizen 18 years or older appearing between the ages of 18 and 24, the competition for the seventh slot allows candidates to create an on-line profile and post videos, photos and blogs. Competition rank and, ultimately, victory are determined by votes cast by registered users.
D’Angelo, 21, is a volunteer firefighter originally from Tigard who joined the Dundee Fire Department the day after he turned 18, almost four years ago. He works for Shields Manufacturing Inc., a Sherwood machine shop, enjoys playing the guitar and hopes to make firefighting his profession.
“I guess you could say I’m a little crazy,” D’Angelo said when asked why he wants to be on the show. “It would be an awesome experience, something to tell the grandkids ... and you get to be on TV!”
D’Angelo said that the show, know for its “drama and breakdowns,” is looking for a change. “They say this year they want to cast more career-minded people with goals,” he said. “For the past almost four years I have really been focused on my career.”
“I get along with pretty much everybody,” he added, explaining why he would be a good addition to the show. “And I want it so bad.”
D’Angelo submitted a video entry in the original casting session. Although he was not selected at the time, a network representative called and asked him to participate in the on-line competition for the seventh spot.
The competition, which began May 2 and continues through July 10, features five rounds. During each round, contestants must post a blog on a particular subject. Over the competition, participants must post on their best and worst quality traits, their family relationships, their conflict resolution approaches and, if they drink alcohol and their general behavior while intoxicated.
The voting count is reset at the beginning of the second and third rounds. The winner will be announced July 10 as the seventh member of the cast, based on number of votes.
