Newberg community members joined thousands of Oregonians in a
statewide effort to clean up local parks and waterways Saturday.
Part of SOLV’s 12th annual Down by the Riverside event, volunteers
worked from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. to enhance cities, parks and green
spaces in more than 100 communities in Oregon and Vancouver, Wash.
One such site was Newberg’s Hoover Park.
Organized
by the Chehalem Park and Recreation District in conjunction with
SOLV, the Hoover Park cleanup included landscaping, weeding,
pruning, invasive plant removal, trail maintenance and general
cleanup.
According to parks supervisor Jim McMaster, a coordinator of the
event, most of the volunteers were NHS students.
“We (at the park district) are always trying to do environmentally
friendly things,” McMaster said. “It’s good for the kids — as well
as the community — to get into it.”
Newberg City Councilor Bart Rierson was among the many volunteers
at the cleanup. “Newberg’s a great place to live,” he explained. “I
love this place and I want to make it as nice as I can. I like to
encourage my kids to do things like that to set a good example. My
son was (at the cleanup) and he was working right along with me.”
McMaster explained that this was the first year the park district
was asked by SOLV to coordinate a Down by the Riverside event in the
area.
“(The park district) can only get so much done,” he said. “It’s
great when the community can take ownership of their parks.”
More than 14,500 individuals volunteered statewide during last
year’s Down by the Riverside event. The event is presented by the
Oregon Lottery. Major sponsors include the Oregon Parks and
Recreation Department, the Portland Marine Dealers Association,
Starbucks Coffee Company, Umpqua Bank and Weyerhaeuser Company
Foundation.
SOLV, originally called Stop Oregon Litter and Vandalism, is a
nonprofit organization dedicated to improving the livability of
Oregon. SOLV also organizes the annual Oregon beach cleanup. |
