Preliminary results from the
Yamhill County clerk indicate that Mark Ankeny has won the race for
Zone 2 director of the school district by receiving 2,841 votes or
64.64 percent.
Ankeny said he was happy with the win, adding that he was
encouraged the community had put its trust in him. “I felt that I
was called to put my name in the hat to contribute to the
community,” he said in explaining his run for election.
Jeff Tant came in second place with 614 votes or 13.97 percent, Job
Rabinowitz garnered 607 votes or 13.81 percent, and Jim Bascom
finished with 335 votes or 7.57 percent.
The race for Zone 7 went to incumbent Debbie Hawblitzel with 3,086
votes or 74.26 percent. Her challenger, Michael Richter, garnered
1,066 votes or 25.73 percent.
Hawblitzel, who was running for the first time since being
appointed to the position, was happy with the outcome. She hadn’t
campaigned at all, she said, “I just signed up and hoped for the
best.”
In Zone 3 Melinda Van Bossuyt garnered 3,506 votes in her
unchallenged race for re-election. Unchallenged incumbent Mitsi
Vondrachek won Zone 6 with 3,567 votes.
The school board will appoint a representative to finish the
remaining two years of Floyd Aylor’s term. Aylor, who had been on
the board for 12 years, resigned for health reasons after the
deadline to participate in the election.
Citizens interested in the position must live in Zone 1 of the
school district, be a registered voter, and have been a resident of
the Newberg School District for at least one year.
