Classical music — Orchestra continues mission with first performance at George Fox

The approximately 90-mem­­ber Kiev Sym­phony Or­chest­ra and Chorus will perform at George Fox University for the first time Sept. 26. The orchestra performs classical masterpieces, Amer­ican spirituals, jazz and Broadway numbers, and Ukrainian ethnic music — including many hymns that had been banned in Kiev for 70 years before the collapse of the Soviet Union
   Twenty years ago, just after the collapse of the Soviet Union, a conductor named Roger McMurrin traveled to Kiev, Ukraine, to lead a local orchestra and 35 vocalists in a performance of Handel’s “Messiah.
