Start slow —
The bench press is an advanced exercise demanding considerable skill and muscle balance from all muscles in each shoulder so that your upper arm bone properly coordinates properly with your shoulder blade.
Dear Colin: I recently  started exercising following the recommendation from my doctor to help my chronic shoulder and back pain.
