From left to right, Chehalem Online Learning Alliance middle school students Jaci Smith, 11, Brittany Tish, 13, and Moriah Dirk, 12, mix arrowroot and water to experiment with viscosity Nov. 28 at Newberg School District offices. The program, which caters mostly to homeschool students, features online and/or textbook-based coursework along with supervision from a teacher and a weekly classroom period.
About 25 students sit in a classroom, at one point performing a science experiment on viscosity by mixing arrowroot and water, then reading their own poetry aloud.
