Shauna Sherick, founder of Wildwood Farm Sanctuary, holds one of the 20 chickens her organization helped rescue from a failed factory farm poultry operation earlier this year. Although the sanctuary is just starting out, Sherick has begun the process of obtaining nonprofit status and hopes to begin taking in larger animals in the future.
The different attitudes animal owners tend to have toward traditional pets — like cats and dogs — as opposed to livestock — cattle, sheep, goats, chickens, etc.
