Green School at Newberg High School will hold a benefit concert to support victims of the Haitian earthquake. To be held at 7:30 p.m. Monday, the event is billed as Hope 4 Haiti and will be headlined by pianist Michael Allen Harrison.
Also performing that night will be Mezzo Devotion, NHS’ audition choir, the school’s jazz ensemble and strings ensemble.
Ally Fettig, 16, a sophomore in Green School’s Leadership team, is helping organize the event. “We want to raise $5,000,” she said. Their plan is to sell out the 520 seats in the auditorium at $10 for adults and $5 for students.
They’re also working on a CD that will feature all of the night’s performers. “Everybody that’s performing will be on the album,” said Lily Gunn, 15. The CD will be on sale at the concert. The money will go to Medical Teams International, which is based in Portland, and be earmarked specifically for Haiti relief.
Besides organizing high school mainstays such as assemblies, the Green School leadership team has focused on community service projects and was behind a park clean-up project a few months ago.
Green School principal Karen Pugsley emphasized that while the projects are supported by the adults at the school, they’re student directed.
